During Southern Brave's clash with Manchester Super Giants in Southampton, he scooped a catch with his elbow at the boundary, the on-field decision initially went his way, and the third umpire overturned it on review.

The ball was racing past the rope. Stubbs contorted his body and the leather nestling against his arm rather than his palm. The instinct was to stop it by any legal means and claim the dismissal. A fielder does not calculate which body part is about to make contact when the ball is travelling at pace.

## Law 33.2 and the Elbow Exclusion

The Laws of Cricket are precise about fair catches. Under Law **33.2**, a catch is valid only if a fielder takes the ball with their hand or hand holding the ball. The elbow, technically part of the forearm, does not qualify. The third umpire applied the letter of the law correctly.

The problem is that the letter of the law works against the contest. Stubbs pulled off an act requiring split-second reaction time and spatial awareness near the boundary. The reward for executing that play was a dismissal. Instead, the batsman survived. Stubbs was left what observers described as "fuming" after the review overturned the decision in real time.

> Tristan Stubbs is left "fuming" after taking a brilliant catch with his elbow, only for the decision to be given not out after review.

## Technology Catching What the Rulebook Misses

Cricket has invested in slow-motion replays and freeze-frame analysis to eliminate howlers. That same technology disallowed a piece of fielding because the contact point was the elbow rather than the hand.

The MCC has previously amended catch laws to accommodate modern fielding, most notably clarifying that a fielder can complete a catch after stepping over the boundary provided they are airborne and re-establish contact inside the field of play. The elbow catch is a similar gap between the statute book and the contemporary game.

A targeted amendment would expand the definition of a fair catch to include any contact above the wrist that is not intentional use of the body to trap the ball. This would close the Stubbs loophole without opening the door to football-style chest traps or leg saves.

For now, the replay stands. Stubbs did everything right athletically and everything wrong anatomically. The law was applied correctly. The law itself is wrong, and the frustration in Southampton will not be the last time cricket confronts this particular gap.","/articles/stubbs-elbow-catch-overturned-southern-brave-controversy",[98,99,100,101,102,103,104,105,85,106],"analysis","basketball","cricket","f1","football","general","golf","mma","tennis",[108,122,134
"kohli-lords-farewell-entertaining-74-could-be-final-england-appearance","/articles/kohli-lords-farewell-entertaining-74-could-be-final-england-appearance","Kohli's Lord's Masterclass May Be His Final English Chapter","Feature","category","Marcus Wright","SportPulse Contributor","MW","2026-07-19 18:52:10","7 min read","/images/articles/kohli-lords-farewell-entertaining-74-could-be-final-england-appearance.webp","Cricket, ODI, India tour of England","An entertaining 74 from 60 balls at Lord's could mark Virat Kohli's last innings on English soil in a bittersweet ODI farewell.
"crocker-belfast-homecoming-rebuild-after-title-loss","/articles/crocker-belfast-homecoming-rebuild-after-title-loss","Crocker's Road Home: Belfast Crucial to Former Champion's Rebuild","Sarah Martinez","Transfer Correspondent","SM","2026-06-27 08:19:13","5 min read","https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/976/cpsprodpb/949f/live/bb7472b0-71bb-11f1-9461-671317a6ae75.jpg","Boxing, IBF","After losing his IBF welterweight crown, Lewis Crocker's manager eyes Belfast as the launchpad for a second act.
"mccarthy-run-out-blunder-hundred-sunrisers-leeds-southern-brave","/articles/mccarthy-run-out-blunder-hundred-sunrisers-leeds-southern-brave","McCarthy's Bat-Down Blunder Costs Sunrisers Leeds in the Hundred","Football: Analysis","2026-07-25 12:36:09","1 min read","/images/articles/mccarthy-run-out-blunder-hundred-sunrisers-leeds-southern-brave.webp","The Hundred, Womens Cricket, Southern Brave, Sunrisers Leeds","Cassidy McCarthy's lazy bat-down gave Lizelle Lee the easiest run-out of the Hundred season so far."]
