Gunn's Debut: Four Goals, Zero Shielding

Angus Gunn's first match for San Jose Earthquakes ended in a 4-0 home defeat to Orlando City. The Scotland-capped goalkeeper signed midseason after departing Norwich City earlier in the summer, joining as a free agent at 29. PayPal Park had little to cheer across 90 minutes.

Orlando's third and fourth goals followed the same pattern. San Jose committed players forward searching for a response, and Pareja's side punished the turnovers with direct, vertical football through the channels. His Orlando teams are built around efficiency in transition. This performance fit that template: clean in possession, clinical without it, converting the chances San Jose presented and rarely troubled by the Earthquakes' limited attacking output.

Gunn Left Chasing Runners

Gunn was not directly at fault for any of the four goals. A back line that failed to track runners left him in repeated one-on-one situations against Orlando's forwards. San Jose's marking broke down on set pieces, and the left side of their back five was opened up repeatedly by wide players exploiting the space behind the full-backs with well-timed runs and quick combinations.

Gunn had last featured competitively for Norwich in the Championship. The pace and directness of MLS opposition caught him and the defence in front of him cold following the layoff.

Ian Russell's Shape Needs Work Before the Next Fixture

Gunn's arrival addressed a problem position for San Jose, but the shape and structure ahead of him need urgent correction. Ian Russell's side have little time to regroup. The defensive fundamentals displayed against Orlando will cost results if repeated.

Orlando's away performance reinforced their credentials as a postseason proposition under Pareja. In a league where the table punishes slow starts, Gunn's debut will not define his San Jose tenure on its own, but he and his back line are running out of matches to sort themselves out.
