Not in some abstract, metaphorical sense, but literally: the chainsaws arrived last week, and what was once a canopy of ironwood and dipterocarp is now a flat, smoking grid of stumps and red earth. Within months, this patch of primary rainforest will be replanted with oil palm. Within two years, it will be producing the commodity that ends up in roughly half of all packaged supermarket products worldwide.

For the orangutans on the ground, the distinction between sustainable and unsustainable palm oil is academic. The forest is gone either way.

Indonesia's government has signaled that agricultural expansion into forested regions will continue, driven by domestic food security concerns and the political economy of land distribution. Transmigration programs, which resettle populations from densely populated islands like Java to less developed regions, remain a cornerstone of national planning.
Conservation organizations are pivoting toward landscape-level strategies that attempt to integrate orangutan habitat into broader land-use planning, rather than relying on isolated protected areas. The idea is to create corridors between forest fragments, allowing populations to move and interbreed without venturing into human settlements.
These corridors are expensive, politically complex, and require buy-in from the very industries responsible for the fragmentation. Progress is measured in years and decades, not election cycles.
Meanwhile, on the ground, the immediate calculus remains unchanged. A new settler clears a hectare. An orangutan has nowhere to go. A team arrives with a cage and a tranquillizer gun.
The question Sally Williams poses in her investigation is not whether we can save every orangutan. We cannot. The question is whether we are honest about what our choices actually mean, and whether the systems we have built to manage this crisis are anything more than a way of making extinction look orderly.
