McLaren quiet Portimao test hides serious TPC engineering work

Three drivers at Portimao signals McLaren treating TPC running as anything but a casual off-season shakedown.

McLaren ran three drivers through the Algarve International Circuit on Wednesday, putting Lando Norris, Oscar Piastri, and Leonardo Fornaroli in a Testing of Previous Cars (TPC) session. TPC running is restricted to older machinery, capped in mileage, and fenced off from current car development. Packing Norris and Piastri alongside Ferrari Driver Academy prospect Fornaroli into a single day at Portimao tells you the Woking outfit is not treating this as a casual shakedown.

The TPC Rulebook

The FIA Sporting Regulations cap TPC mileage at 1,000 km per driver across any two consecutive seasons, using cars at least two years old. For McLaren, that likely puts the MCL36 or MCL35M in use at Portimao. These machines run on spec tires allocated by Pirelli for testing, not the compound-tuned rubber teams race on weekends. The power units are detuned or life-limited units outside the current pool.

Lap times coming out of Portimao are engineering fiction. They tell you almost nothing about raw pace. They tell you whether a driver can process information, adapt to setup changes, and run through a structured program without asking the same question twice. For McLaren, building around arguably the most balanced driver pairing on the grid, TPC days are about data quality, not headlines.

Norris and Piastri on the Same Day

Race drivers normally split test days to maximize individual kilometer allocations. Running both on the same day suggests a comparative program, or at minimum a program where setup changes need validation across two driving styles on the same track surface in similar conditions.

If Norris reports a specific behavior at the apex of Portimao's Turn 1 and Piastri does not, engineers can isolate whether the car is doing something aerodynamically unpredictable or whether the feedback is driver-specific. That matters for McLaren, whose MCL38 philosophy last season leaned on a stable rear platform both drivers praised for predictability.

Norris is the known quantity, his feedback a cornerstone of McLaren's rebuild since Andrea Stella's technical restructure. Piastri, now fully embedded, is the proof case that the car's operating window is not shrinking around a single driving style. If both are logging data on the same day, McLaren is likely building a setup baseline it can carry forward into the current car program without translation errors.

Fornaroli's FDA Presence in a McLaren Garage

The intrigue sits with Leonardo Fornaroli. The Italian, part of the Ferrari Driver Academy and a race winner in Formula 3, is not a McLaren-contracted driver. His presence at a McLaren TPC test raises questions about how McLaren evaluates talent outside its own roster.

Under TPC rules, any driver holding an FIA Super License or qualifying for one can participate. The kilometer restrictions are per-driver, not per-team. Fornaroli's running does not eat into Norris's or Piastri's allocations; it is separate budget. For a team that has invested in its own driver development through the Zak Brown era, putting a Ferrari academy product in one of its cars is either a commercial one-off, an evaluation with an eye toward a 2025 or 2026 free agency play, or a signal that McLaren's junior program is looking outward.

Fornaroli's F3 pedigree is built on consistency. He won the 2024 F3 title by finishing every single race in the points, a statistical outlier in a championship where DRS trains and sprint race chaos make consistency nearly impossible. That profile fits a TPC program because lap time is irrelevant. What matters is whether a young driver can hit his marks, run repeatable sectors, and provide clean telemetry uncorrupted by driving style noise.

Correlation and the Restriction Firewall

The FIA prohibits using TPC data to develop the current car's aerodynamic surfaces or setup philosophies. The data is still valuable for correlation work, the process of matching wind tunnel and CFD predictions to real-world track behavior.

If McLaren runs the two-year-old car through ride-height and rake sweeps at Portimao, engineers can compare the resulting downforce numbers to what the wind tunnel predicted for the same configuration. If the correlation is off, the team knows its simulation tools need recalibration. The current car, built on those same simulation tools, would inherit the same inaccuracy. The TPC data cannot be used to change the current car's wing, but it can change the team's confidence in the digital models that designed that wing.

McLaren's mid-2023 transformation was built on exactly this kind of correlation correction. The team identified that its wind tunnel-to-track correlation was misaligned, masking the true performance ceiling of its updates. Once corrected, the update cadence produced immediate gains.

Why Portimao

The Algarve circuit combines high-speed sweepers, elevation changes, and a notoriously abrasive surface. It is one of the most mechanically demanding tracks on any test calendar, not a track for a simple mechanical shakedown.

The elevation drop between the entry of Turn 1 and the apex of the downhill right-hander at the bottom of the circuit loads the suspension in compression in a way few other tracks do. McLaren has spent considerable effort dialing in its anti-dive geometry and suspension kinematics to keep the aerodynamic platform stable under braking. Portimao is a stress test for that philosophy.

If the older car is porpoising or losing rear load on the downhill entries, that data, correlated with the simulation, tells McLaren whether its current suspension modeling is accurate or missing a real-world effect. The track's coastal location also means wind direction shifts constantly, adding another variable. Teams either avoid that or lean into it. McLaren leaning into it suggests the team is stress-testing its data handling under imperfect conditions.

No Announcements, Just Data

No announcements are coming from this test. TPC results do not produce contract extensions or driver promotions. Fornaroli's presence does not mean he is McLaren-bound, and Norris running laps does not mean a setup breakthrough is imminent.

McLaren comes away from Portimao with three things: a fresh data set for correlation validation, a structured evaluation of whether its driver feedback protocols are consistent across Norris and Piastri, and a first look at a young driver the team may or may not be interested in for the future. For a team that turned its 2023 season around by fixing the basics, that is quiet, unglamorous work.

The next technical challenge sits in the regular season, where the surfaces, the tires, and the data all count for points.
