Michael Kim's 59 Joins the Rarest Scorecard in PGA Tour History

Michael Kim posted a 12-under-par 59 during the opening round of the 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, Minnesota, joining one of the shortest lists in professional golf. Sub-60 rounds on the PGA Tour have occurred fewer than a dozen times since Al Geiberger carded the first one in 1977.

Kim made 12 birdies on the par-71 layout, attacking pins and converting putts from the opening hole through the 18th without a bogey. By the time his final putt dropped, players who had already finished their rounds were lingering near the scorer's tent to shake his hand.

"I feel pretty cool being part of the history books," Kim said after signing his card.

PGA Tour officials verified the score with no errors. Kim, a former University of California standout who won the 2018 John Deere Classic, has struggled with inconsistent form in the seven years since, making only sporadic runs into contention. The 59 is the lowest round of his professional career by a significant margin.

The names on the all-time sub-60 list remain few: Geiberger, Chip Beck, David Duval, Paul Goydos, Jim Furyk (who also shot a 58), and Scottie Scheffler. Kim now sits alongside them.

The round gives Kim the first-round lead at the 3M Open, which carries full FedEx Cup points. His previous best PGA Tour round was a 62. No player who has shot 59 on Tour has failed to finish in the top 10 that week.
