Remco Evenepoel won the Tour de France stage 16 time trial and cut 28 seconds from Tadej Pogacar's general classification lead. The world time-trial champion rode with the discipline to budget every watt to the line and the intent to take the stage. He managed both.

UAE Team Emirates now has to factor in a rival who proved he can take meaningful time in specific conditions. Soudal-QuickStep has evidence the gap is not untouchable. The remaining mountain stages will determine whether Evenepoel can chip away further on climbs where Pogacar has dismantled every other contender.

The time trial was Evenepoel's best opportunity to make a dent, and he converted it. Sustaining that pressure on high-altitude finishes against Pogacar is a harder ask. But the race now has an active second narrative heading into the third week.
